Jud Virden is Associate Laboratory Director for the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington. PNNL is a $1 billion research institution operated by Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy. With a focus on accelerating the deployment of technology to market, Jud leads 1,000 scientists, engineers, and staff in delivering science and technology solutions for the nation’s complex energy and environmental challenges — including developing biofuels, integrating renewable energy, developing energy storage technologies, ensuring sustainable hydropower, and modernizing the power grid. Since joining PNNL in 1991 as a researcher, Jud has served in a variety of technical and managerial positions including Energy market sector manager and Chief Science & Technology Officer for PNNL’s energy and environment research. His career includes working at 3M and at GM, where he helped build several public-private technology partnerships. Jud is actively involved in American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, CleanTech Alliance of Washington, Oregon Innovation Council, University of Michigan Energy Institute, and Georgia Tech Strategic Energy Institute. His honors include R&D 100 and Federal Laboratory Consortium awards, an MIT Discover Award, and a Financial Times Global Automotive Award with Delphi Automotive. Jud earned doctorate and bachelor degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington. He was elected in 2014 to the Washington State Academy of Sciences.
